Obscure 2 é um survival-horror com um enredo inusitado, já que a história começa quando um grupo de jovens encontra uma planta misteriosa no campus da universidade que estudam e o vegetal se mostra hospedeiro de uma miríade de bichos infernais, liberando sobre a instituição de ensino horror e medo. O tom geral do jogo é bastante trash, o que significa que a trilha sonora possui temas de heavy metal enquanto inimigos gosmentos partem das sombras para que o jogador elimine-os da maneira mais grotesca possível.

Obscure 2 exige a cooperação constante entre o jogador e seu aliado, que pode ser controlado pelo computador ou administrado por um amigo que pode assumí-lo a qualquer momento da partida. Existem seis personagens no total que serão revezados durante o game onde cada um deles possui habilidades distintas e armas suficientes para esmagar qualquer criatura do além.

O cenário consiste nos arredores e subterrâneos de uma universidade antiga, com vários cômodos com decorações que por si só já são capazes de assustar aqueles que temem os inúmeros experimentos científicos de uma instituição de centenas de anos de existência.
